DESIGN PROJECT

Project Description

Students proposed a self-directed project that utilized mediums, skills, and concepts learned over the span of this course in order to come up with a fully fleshed out proposal for a body of work. Students researched ideas and concepts, proposed a project based around a concept or subject matter, had to get approval for their project and a dedicated period of time in order to finish their work. Each student also had to create an Artist Statement where they formally analyzed their work. The course culminated with group critique where each student presenting their project including their Artist Statement, process and intent, and final curated work.

Project Steps

The class begins with a screening of the BBC documentary about art called “Why Beauty Matters,” and a discussion surrounding the concept of art. The project begins with Step 1 – The Project Proposal. Students are guided through research and brainstorming for ideas about their projects. Students then had to write a project proposal that contained the following information:

• What medium?

• What is the concept?

• How does this tie in with skills or concepts we have learned this year?

• A short description of what proposed project.

Students then submitted their proposal and met with me for final approval.
